The world's longest undersea tunnel, connecting Dalian and Yantai through the Bohai Strait has been projected to be constructed by the government. The government would spend about 260 billion yuan for this project.
This 123-kilometre rail tunnel will carry passengers and vehicles from Dalian in Liaoning province to Yantai in Shandong in about 40 minutes. Presently, Ferries throughout the Bohai Strait take 8 hours.
90 kilometres of the tunnel would be underwater, the longest of its kind in the world, outstripping Japan's Seikan Tunnel (53.85km) and the Channel Tunnel (50.5km) which connects Britain and the European mainland. Trains through the tunnel would travel at speeds up to 250km/h.
A Guangdong-based paper which broke the news, the Liaoning and Shandong governments will each pay 100 billion yuan to fund the project, with the remaining 60 billion needed being covered by railway corporations. A member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering said annual revenue from the tunnel could be in excess of 22.7 billion yuan, mainly from freight fees.
