Energy Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson has announced that the government will release a request for proposals (RFP) for cogeneration power projects this month. The minister said preferred bidders would be announced in Q3-2015. The government would seek to secure at least 800 MW of cogenerated capacity, in line with Gazetted determinations. However, Joemat-Pettersson said the assignment could be adjusted upwards in case there is a strong response to the RFP.
She also said a gas-to-power request for information (RFI) would be released in this month, as a precursor to a process of procuring 3 126 MW of gas capacity. Indicating that the Independent Power Producer (IPP) Office, which had run four successful renewable-power bidding rounds, would supervise the process, she added, "Responses to this RFI will be used in designing the gas-to-power procurement programme. This programme is expected to stimulate a gas sector, which could contribute to the growth of the economy."
